Where Pop Culture and Cocktails Collide

Drink Identifier: Scream 5 (2022)

A young woman at a party holds a beer bottle.

Mm, non-brand specific 'Light Beer'

The liquor and beers of Scream 5 (2022) identified.

Welcome to another Scream Drink Identifier, this time we’re looking at Scream 5 (2022) Once again we’ll have some light product placement that will be replaced by fake props once underage potential murder victims start drinking. But first, we start with the adults.

White Wine- Marley Shelton as Judy Hicks

A woman writes on a post it note on her kitchen island. Next her is an open bottle of wine and wine glass.
The constant notes about lemon squares are a weird tic

Judy Hicks likes to wind down with a glass of white wine after work, most likely a chardonnay. Very relatable. Her obsession with lemon squares is weird though. Her drinking is certainly less depressing than how Dewey is portrayed…

David Arquette as Dewey Riley: Racer 5 IPA Beer, Irish Coffee, Grand Marnier

Dewey Riley has fallen on hard times in Scream 5. He’s unemployed, divorced, and living alone in a dirty trailer. It’s clear from looking around his apartment he passes a lot of the time by drinking.

A man in his kitchen. The foreground shows a bar area with liquor bottles, cocktail shaker, and flask.
At least he’s still making cocktails and not just drinking from the bottle.

He seems to have a decent home bar, although I’m not sure what cocktails he’s making as his booze selection appears to be vodka, Vya Sweet Vermouth, and Grand Marnier.

Also, I personally do not care for that kind of shaker. I prefer my stainless steel shiny Boston shaker set.

The Grand Marnier bottle is the only one fully label out and I’m inclined to believe this was product placement, as Grand Marnier as well as its sister product Frangelico appear in Scream 6. Grand Marnier is also a sweet orange liqueur made from cognac, which doesn’t scream “bachelor booze”.

A man opens his fridge to reveal minimal groceries and beer bottles.
Can confirm: this is what a bachelor’s fridge looks like.

These beer labels were too blurry for me to make out. But the bottles are Racer 5 IPA (a giant clue to that is in a later scene). Let me know in the comments if you can recognize the cans.

A close up of a bottle of brown liquor and a coffee cup sitting on a dirty coffee table.
If you’re spiking your morning coffee, you might have a problem.

Dewey also liquors up his coffee in the morning. Which *is* on brand for an alcoholic in a depression spiral. This is label-in to obscure the brand so we can add ‘depressing’ to the list of reasons brands don’t want to be associated with a scene along with ‘underage drinking’ and ‘murder victim’.

This brings us to the main drinking scene, the classic party finale bloodbath.

Racer 5 IPA, 3 Olives Vodka, and Fake Beer During the Party Finale in Scream 5

A close up the back of man carrying a six pack of beer that says "Racer 5 IPA" and a bottle of vodka.
Hey, that bottle’s like half empty already.

So full-on view of the name on a 6-pack of Racer 5 IPA. Combined with the (somewhat obscured bottles in Dewey’s fridge) this is either product placement or the filmmakers just like this beer and asked if they could use it in their movie.

The bottle this no-name extra is carrying is a 3 Olives Vodka bottle. The label isn’t shown but it has the distinctive ridges and blue label of a 3 Olives bottle.

Of course, once all the underage drinking and murder starts the recognizable brands are switched out with:

Fake Brand Prop Beer

I still don’t know why they ended the party instead of just continuing to run away.

My face after being forced to drink fake prop beer.

Hilariously this fake light beer label seems to have been taken from a stock image kit easily found by googling “fake beer label,” which suggests a journey for the prop designer that I love. This fake brand of light beer (in multiple colors apparently) also shows up as a callback to the original Scream via the fake movie-within-a-movie Stab.

A woman lounges on a couch with her feet on the table. The table has an illegal flower vase and fake beer bottle. An inset shows the fake beer bottle and has been digitally lightened to be more clearly read.
The thing in the middle is a flower vase.

We see Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy Meeks-Martin drinking the ‘Light Beer’ as she watches the fictionalized version of her uncle experience a similar run-in with the killer.

A tv showing a movie scene depciting a group of teens at a party drinking beer. The foreground has beer bottles in front of the tv.
Tag Yourself: I’m the lady retconned to be not white.
A man lays down on an ugly couch next to a coffee table full of beer and snacks.
Fake Randy drinks Fake Beer. Meta.

It’s pretty cute Mindy and her fake uncle drink the same beer. It’s less cute that a masked serial killer sneaks up behind them while they’re on a couch, but that’s life in Woodsboro for you.

Unidentified Beer/Most Likely Fake

Stop shaking that beer up, you’re going to get suds all over your Ghostface outfit

We also Mikey Madison as Amber Freeman grabbing an unidentified beer from the basement. Again this beer was hard to read, but going off my good friend ‘vector image search’ that I used to find the other fake beer labels, this beer appears to look a lot like this fake beer image:

from https://www.istockphoto.com/vector/set-of-vintage-frames-for-labels-gold-stickers-bottle-beer-gm1144359332-307620305?phrase=beer%20label

The middle one looks awfully close to the beer held in the film (unless it was a knock-off of another brand I’m not familiar with, let me know in the comments). It would have been hilarious if it had been an Amber beer to point at her guilt, but alas, some dreams are too big to become reality.
