Where Pop Culture and Cocktails Collide

A Mauve Sky Gin Cocktail

Mauve Sky
A delicious gin cocktail with a creative blue tea garnish

This super fancy gin cocktail recipe is a play on the classic Aviation. The original is a citrusy gin martini that combines the sweet cherry flavor of a maraschino liqueur and the florally goodness of creme de violette. Mine will also be a refreshing gin cocktail, but with the added bonus of tea flavors!

For this version, I switched out the violet flavors with the subtle exotic tea flavors of the blue Butterfly Pea Tea. This blue tea is a fascinating ingredient, and not just because it has fabulous color changing properties (although it is freaking amazing how it turns from a deep gorgeous blue to a bright vibrant purple.) In Hindu cultures, it is associated with Kinnari, which is like an Asian centaur except instead of half horse, it’s half swan. This sounds extra magical, but it just sort of looks like a giant chicken man.

Even on a tree branch, still fancy

The tea is also said to have powerful anti-oxidant properties, so you can pretend you’re being healthy while you day drink! You can also regale your guests with the scientific name of the plant, Clitoria ternatea, which in latin directly translates to “tea of the lady parts.”

This gin cocktail recipe batches out really nicely, so feel free to make it before your party so you can enjoy yourself along with your guests. As with any of my cocktails, the recipe is a good place to get you started, but feel free to add simple syrup or more lime juice until you achieve the perfect level of sweet or tart for your taste buds.

My recipe uses a concentrated version of the blue tea to achieve maximum color and flavor without diluting your cocktail.

Mauve Sky

A creative take on the Aviation gin cocktail using color changing Blue Tea.
Servings 1

Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz Gin
  • .75 oz Lime Juice Use fresh squeezed!
  • .5 oz Maraschino Liqueur Such as Luxardo
  • .25 oz Simple Syrup
  • Splash Concentrated Blue Tea 4 tea bags steeped in 1 cup water

Instructions

  • Stir all ingredients minus Blue Tea with ice
  • Strain into chilled martini glass or over ice.
  • Top with Blue Tea (for the layering effect, use a mister.)

Batch

(Serves 5)
1 cup Gin
1/2 cup Lime Juice
1/3 cup Maraschino Liqueur
Water (to taste, about a 1/4 cup)
Simple Syrup (to taste, about a tablespoon or two)
1/4 cup Concentrated Blue Tea

Mix all ingredients except Blue tea in a pitcher and allow to chill in the fridge. Add splash blue tea to each cocktail as it’s served, which makes a pretty two-toned cocktail. If you don’t plan on doing the two-toned color effect, you can mix the blue tea in with the rest of your gin cocktail batch.

Creative Garnishes

Fancy
All this cocktail needs is a lime wheel to look stunningly beautiful.

Really Fancy
Slowly add just a splash (or invest in a mister) of the concentrated Blue Tea on top of your served cocktail and amaze your guests as the blue liquid creates a vibrant purple-y layer on the top of the cocktail.

Fancy as Fuck
Serve up some real fancy by throwing a bright orange edible Marigold on top to simulate a burning sun in your mauve sky.
