Where Pop Culture and Cocktails Collide

Drink Identifier- Night of the Living Deb (2014)

All the boozy beverages the characters drink in Night of the Living Deb (2014)

Night of the Living Deb is another entry in the ZomRomCom genre pioneered by Sean of the Dead, and even has a punny title to match.

“Quirky” Deb (Maria Thayer) has a one-night stand with bland hunk Ryan (Michael Cassidy) and decides to latch on like the aggressively clingy person she is (it’s unclear if this is supposed to be endearing). Luckily for her chances at love (and nothing else), a zombie apocalypse breaks out and adorable mayhem ensues.

It’s okay, the movie like the character kind of grows on you as you watch.

Anyway, to the drinks. Deb and Ryan first meet over their shared drink order of a…

White Russian- Deb (Maria Thayer) and Ryan Waverly (Michael Cassidy)

Actress Maria Thayer holds a white russian cocktail.
It’s weird that this character isn’t also a stoner. It seems like she should be.

Deb runs into Ryan ordering a White Russian at the bar and for some inexplicable reason thinks it’s hers and starts drinking it. It was of course just a coincidence and he had ordered it for himself. A meet-cute involving drinks, adorable.

Of course, White Russians are the official movie drink of quirky slackers and stoners, so it fits Deb pretty well, but it just makes Ryan seem like a dweeb. (And I like white russians!)

Allagash White Beer and White Russian- Ruby (Julie Brister) and Deb (Maria Thayer) respectively

A woman in a festive sweater drinking beer talks to a woman drinking a cocktail.
We never get closure on Ruby. I guess she’s blown up?

We are first introduced to Deb talking to her friend Ruby (Julie Brister). Ruby is drinking an Allagash White beer and Deb is of course drinking her white russian. Allagash white beer is from a brewery in Portland, Maine and is comparable to Blue Moon or Spotted Cow (for another regional, small brewery.)

Ruby spends most of the movie as a zombie locked in Deb’s trunk, but the last we see of her she’s shambling off into a field never to be heard from again.

Sparkling Wine – Chaz Waverly (Chris Marquette)

Deb and Ryan eventually find themselves at Ryan’s family’s mansion where they mostly drink whiskey and champagne (there’s something wrong with the water, you see). But Ryan’s older brother Chaz (Chris Marquette) gets the stand out at he sits jealous and alone with a hoagie, a bottle of sparkling wine, and a giant gun.

Actor Chris Marquette holds a sandwich at a dinner table. On the table are a bottle of champagne and a large gun.
Do not mix booze and sandwiches with guns.

This character is a spoiled man-child, so this is pretty fitting. If you can recognize this exact brand of wine please let me know in the comments down below or on social media.
