Where Pop Culture and Cocktails Collide

Drink Identifier: The Suicide Squad (2021)

I don't think feeding your rat alcohol is proper rodent care.

The Suicide Squad doesn’t have much time to drink in this film, as they spend most of their time getting brutally attacked and murdered. There is one brief scene set in a South American bar where the Squad manages to loosen up a little and enjoy some drinks (except for King Shark, who has a tendency to stick out in a crowd, he gets to wait outside.)

Fernet: Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian), Rick Flag (John Kinnaman), and the Rat (mostly CGI, presumably).

A woman (Daniela Melchior) and a man (Idris Elba) are about to take a shot out of a red glass. Their friend's hands raising their own glasses are seen in the foreground.
I guess the head-exploding collars don’t work as SCRAM bracelets.

Fernet may be the darling shot of bartenders on the west coast and midwest, but it is also hugely popular in South America. Although technically a bitter Italian liqueur, the spirit is so popular in South America that a “Fernet and Coke” is the unofficial drink of Argentina.

Peacemaker (John Cena) shows some surprising cultural sensitivity knowing the local popular drink. Although given his villain turn later in the film, it could also signify that Peacemake received more information on where the mission was and could therefore research the local culture.

On the other hand, he did make sure the Rat was included in the merriment, so that’s nice.

Conquistador Muerto Lager: Bloodsport (Idris Elba)

A man (Idris Elba) wears a beret and drinks from a dark colored beer bottle.
mmm, beer

After the Fernet love fest, some of the characters switch to beer. Bloodsport is shown drinking Conquistador Meurto” Lager. Given that I couldn’t find anything about this specific brand of beer, I’m guessing it’s a fake brand made as a prop for the movie.

A close up of a hand holding a dark beer bottle. The label reads"Conquistador muerto lager"
Is this a real beer? Does anyone know for sure?

Translating to “the dead conqueror”, this beer name could refer to the fact that as member of the Suicide Squad, these warriors don’t have a long life expectancy. My other theory is that it refers to Starro’s original name “Starro: The Conqueror”, and foreshadows that the team will have to kill Starro before the move is over.
